An Alliance with Texas Tech University

April 28, 2009
The Kendall County Economic Development Corporation (KEDC) announced on Monday, April 27, the formation of an educational alliance of Texas Tech University, the Boerne Independent School District, Alamo Colleges and the Kendall County EDC. The name of the alliance has been called Project Red Apple.

The Educational Alliance creates new opportunities for higher education in Boerne and Kendall County by allowing Boerne High School students to earn college credit at Texas Tech and Alamo Colleges, making it easier and more affordable for students to attend college. Adults and high school students can also participate in distance learning courses that will enable them to earn bachelors and graduate degrees in a variety of disciplines, including nursing. Programs are expected to begin in early 2010.

The task force formed by the KCEDC was chaired by Mayor Dan Heckler.  Other members included  Boerne City Manager Ron Bowman; Dean Alexander, CEO, Methodist Boerne Medical Center; Susan Hulett, president, Boerne ISD Board of Trustees; Dr. John Kelly, superintendent, Boerne ISD; Steve Mack, president and CEO, Texas Heritage Bank and KCEDC Board Chairman; Dan Rogers, president and CEO, Kendall County EDC; Kendall County Judge Gaylan Schroeder; Paula White, president and CEO, Greater Boerne Chamber of Commerce; Scott Wilson, owner of Jennings Anderson Ford; Glenn Biggs, Chairman of the Board, Texas Heritage Bank; Carlos Guerrero, Boerne ISD; and Mick McKamie, Law Offices of William M. McKamie, P.C. and Boerne City Attorney.

Dan Heckler, mayor of the City of Boerne, said, “I am deeply committed to increasing the quality of life in Boerne, and it’s exciting to see how quickly the task force has worked to create this partnership.  The Educational Alliance is an important step in creating more high-quality jobs in Boerne.”

“Project Red Apple will allow Boerne ISD students to receive college credit in high school, helping to create new opportunities to earn a college degree while also making college more affordable, since students can enter college with up to 30 hours of credit,” said Susan Hulett, president, Boerne ISD Board of Trustees.  “The Educational Alliance will help build a brighter future for our young people.”

“The Kendall County EDC is dedicated to developing a more highly educated workforce in the county, especially in our target markets.  The Educational Alliance is a bold, innovative partnership that will bring new opportunities to Kendall County,” added Steve Mack, chairman of the board, Kendall County EDC.
